Our Foundation
The Eleanor Foundation was founded in August 2012 in memory of Eleanor Carey, who tragically died at the age of 22 while cycling in London in December 2011. Eleanor was studying International Development at London Metropolitan University and had a deep commitment to sustainable development.
To honour her legacy, her family and friends created the Foundation to continue the work Ellie believed in so strongly. Since early 2014, we've been active in North West Tanzania, helping rural communities in the Chato and Biharamulo Districts.
At the heart of everything we do is a belief in partnership and empowerment. By improving access to basic needs like clean water, sanitation, hygiene and health services, we're helping communities take the lead in creating lasting, positive change.

Project in Focus
An example of what can happen when a community leads and we lend a hand

We first came to Mutundu in 2014 to help fund a shallow well. While we were there, the community told us about a dispensary they had begun building themselves but had not yet been able to complete. The nearest medical care was around 15km away. For many people, and especially for women in labour, that was simply too far.
So we helped them finish it. The dispensary opened in 2016 and is now run by the Chato District Government, serving around 19,000 people. It has outpatient care, a maternity unit, staff housing, solar power, clean water, and a solar-powered fridge for vaccines. The government provides the staff and medicines, so it will keep serving the community for many years to come.
